Bacon Wrapped Figs

Bacon wrapped figs you ask?  Yes.  Bacon wrapped figs.  I know it sounds weird, looks crazy, and yet; I promise they taste like something wrapped in bacon should taste – which is delicious.  I picked up some beautiful organic black figs (which happen to be in season right now) from Trader Joes the other day and with the help of little Row Row we went to work!

You’ll need:

Figs and Bacon

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350.

Step 2: Cut each bacon strip in half.

Step 3: Wrap a piece of the cut bacon around each fig and place seam down on a baking sheet.

Step 4: Bake in your pre-heated oven for approximately 40  minutes or until the bacon is crisp.  Make sure you baste the figs halfway through the cooking time with the bacon grease.

Let them cool for a few minutes before you chow down because the inside of each little fig treasure will be like searing hot molten lava. Not fun.

Next time I make these I’ll drizzle them with a little bit of balsamic reduction.  Directions for how to make a balsamic reduction can be found here under the Prosciutto Wrapped Pear recipe.

Enjoy!!

I was just at a party where they served this – it was fantastic! They had 2 kinds – paleo and non paleo (stuffed with cheese). Both were delicious and really easy to make!!

    1. Marcy Nystrom says:

Gosh I would love to go to a party where people served paleo anything! 😉

I have just started doing the 30 days of no sugar, no grains and no dairy. I was on day 12 when I realized the uncured beef bacon I buy from Trader Joes has sugar in it. Ugg!! I am starting over again today. So, what bacon do you use? Does it have sugar in it? I could not believe I had been eating it but did not even think to check it.

    1. Hi Christine,

I only eat (every other dayish) Coleman All Natural Bacon –

      http://www.colemannatural.com/component/option,com_resource/Itemid,9/article,873/category_id,6/controller,article/

It tastes great, has no nitrates AND HAS NO ADDED SUGAR or even better, no HFCS!

      1. not true, this bacon has brown sugar. check out US Wellness meats for sugar-free bacon.

  3. Thank you Sarah! I got some figs in my CSA box and I had no idea what to do with them. I should have known, bacon! =) How can you go wrong. I’ll be making these tonight! Love all you do!

  4. These are awesome! I make bacon wrapped dates and they are incredible! They are even better if you slip a pecan into the pitted date before wrapping it in bacon…yum!

    1. I love bacon wrapped dates as well. Never thought of throwing pecans into the mix! Yum!

  5. Courtney says:

Another form of meat candy! Woohoo! Will pick up some figs on my next TJ’s run.

  6. Love figs and love bacon… Not sure how I feel about mixing the two, though. 🙂

  7. Danielle says:

If you want a variation (not exactly paleo), try stuffing the figs with goat cheese. Just yesterday I made warmed figs with goat cheese and a balsamic drizzle for dessert. I will definitely be trying the bacon fig combo tho.

    1. That sounds amazing… I LOVE goat cheese, this would be a great variation for those days when I decide to throw in a little dairy. : )

    2. I used to love pancakes with bacon and a little maple syrup. Bacon goes very will with something sweet.

Now the pancake days are over of course, but this simple recipe is a very good idea, and I can see how stuffing the figs with goat cheese would make them extra good!

  8. You say a baking sheet, but wouldn’t the bacon grease just run off the edges and 1) not be left for basting and 2) make a mess? Could one use a pyrex casserole pan instead?

    1. My baking sheet has a lip all the way around that holds in the grease so if yours does not, yes you can use a pyrex casserole pan!

      1. That makes it a jelly-roll pan. Those work great for juicy things!

  9. I adore figs! I cannot wait to try these. Anything wrapped in bacon is a fan favorite at my house!

  10. You are a GENIUS! Have the figs in the fridge and was just thinking about what to do with them (leaning heavily towards goat cheese) and then there you are with the bacon. AWESOME – making these bad boys tomorrow 🙂

    1. I do a cold variation on these with a dab of goat cheese. Cut the fresh, ripe figs in half, put a dab of goat cheese on the cut half and then sprinkle with crumbled, cooked bacon. The bacon bits stick to the goat cheese and they look fancy. Because these are cold, they work very well as an appetizer or on a buffet spread.

My fiancee and I are making these together (along with dates) to be served at our wedding next month! I have a feeling these will be a sweet memory food 🙂

  12. Wow, those look incredible! I’ve gotta try these this weekend. What kind of bacon do you get? Is it necessary to buy the one that is nitrate free????

  13. Marcheline says:

    Drooling.

  14. These look yummy! Definitely on the list of recipes to try. I love figs (as does my 9 month old). Should be able to pick some up at the Farmer’s Market Thursday. Can’t wait! Thanks for sharing…

  15. These are also delicious with medjool dates instead of figs. They almost liquify as they heat.

The bacon will crisp up better if you half-cook them in a skillet before wrapping the fig/date and putting the delicacies in the oven.

  16. So weird, I was just at Trader Joes yesterday and saw those figs. I didn’t buy them because I have never worked with figs. And low and behold, today there is a recipe from Sarah.

  17. I made these last night! Absolutely delicious! I also bought your book this weekend Sarah! I’ve started my 30 day Paleo challenge (currently on day 3) with my fellow CrossFitters! I am so amped and excited to see what great things Paleo has to offer! Thank you for posting such wonderful recipies!

What can we use instead of bacon? I don’t eat bacon because I keep kosher but I’m sure that any religious Muslims would want to know that too…

I use smoked salmon instead but figs and salmon don’t really go together…

    Any ideas?

    1. Kenny says:

      How about beef bacon?

  19. Oh jeez, that looks so good

  20. Dana Post says:

Gonna make these w marjool dates and jalapenos for a church shin-dig tonight. Wish me luck! I will be putting gorgonzola stuffing in some o the jalapenos…..

    1. OMG, that sounds amazing. Good luck!!

  21. Vincent says:

Stick an almond in the center of the fig for extra goodness.

  22. Hubby and I tried these this weekend, I stuffed the dates with a tsp of pork sausage then wrapped with bacon, they were amazing..

  23. Rummah says:

Could you use pears instead of figs?

    1. I’m sure you could but i would cook the bacon until almost crisp first, then wrap the pears and cook for about 1/2 the recommended time. OR – I have an amazing prosciutto wrapped pear recipe that I could recommend trying! http://everydaypaleo.com/2010/11/15/thanksgiving-recipes-and-everyday-paleo-pumpkin-pie-cooking-demo/

  24. Rummah says:

Pears wasn’t a good idea: hard to wrap them with bacon. I’m trying dried figs as fresh ones are a little hard to find up my way.

  25. I’m new to Paleo and in Cedar Rapids,IA. I want to do this right but there are no Trader Joes near where I live. Does anyone know what stores I can get the same kind of products? Thanks!

    1. Theresa says:

You probably know by know there is a health market section in Hy-Vee, the New-Bo City Market in the new-bo area has what youre looking for, the downtown farmers markets in the summer and of course the New Pioneer Co-op in iowa city and coralville. Also, the Health Hut on 1st Ave has a small refrigerated section.

  26. On another note: my whole family is Iowa Hawkeye football fans and these have become a tailgaiting staple for us. Great stuff.

  27. WOW I just tried this and it is fantastic! Thanks for the recipe!

  28. Suzanna says:

We found some at both Meijer and Dominick’s, but I think they aren’t stocking them for much longer. Good luck!

  29. frank says:

I just made this recipe this morning.
Turned out fine, but they were not very tasty.
The figs absorbed all of the bacon taste, so you got a warm mushy fig texture with 100% bacon taste.
That’s not a good thing to have in your mouth.
I wouldn’t make them again, and while I guess it sounded like it was worth trying, I felt it a waste of good bacon.

Another recipe with figs called meat candy is split a fig half way through ,take out the nut stuff with Italian Sausage , wrap bacon around fig and cook in a 350degree oven for at least 20 min. then check for doneness , cook more time if needed ,Smells Great & Tastes scrumptious

  31. Jillian says:

I do a variation with fresh figs wrapped in prosciutto. No oven required and they are ridiculously delicious! But the bacon… I’m going to have to try that.

  32. Jenn says:

ok whenever I eat figs from now on, they NEED to be wrapped in bacon and drizzled with balsamic glaze. OMG so good. goat cheese will be fabulous too with them. thank you for the idea! so easy and delicious.

  33. All I can say is yum!!! Will make some today, just have to go get some figs off of my tree. Thanks!
