Curried Meatballs!

There’s something about the meatball that my kids absolutely adore and who can blame them!  Meatballs are fun, easy to eat, and as I have discovered over the years, these meaty creations can be made a million different ways besides the standard Italian style meatball that most of us are familiar with.  On Sunday we made curried meatballs and I used curry powder from Penzeys Spices!  I was given an amazing gift last week of several Penzeys spices and I have had so much fun trying them all out!  Chrissy of Growing Up Paleo swears by Penzeys and now I know why.  However, any curry powder will work just as well, there are several others that I adore but it was fun using something new!

We made a huge serving of meatballs so that we could have leftovers.  Now the recipe!

Curried Meatballs

Meatballs

3 lbs ground beef

1 cup finely diced red onion

1 cup apple finely diced

1 egg

2 tablespoons curry powder

½ tablespoon sea salt

Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400. In a large bowl, place all of the meatball ingredients and mix well.   using your hands.  Form into meatballs just a little bit bigger than a golf ball and place into a large glass baking dish.  Bake for 25 minutes.  Makes 24 meatballs.  While the meatballs are cooking prepare the sauce!

Curry Sauce

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 teaspoon crushed garlic

1 tablespoon raw organic honey (optional)

1 tablespoon curry powder

2 tablespoons tomato paste

½ cup chicken broth

In a large skillet saute the garlic in the coconut oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Add the honey, curry powder, and tomato paste and whisk together.  Add the chicken broth and continue to whisk until the sauce is smooth.  Bring to a simmer.  After the meatballs come out of the oven, add them to the sauce in the skillet and coat well.  Cover and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes.  Serves 6-7.

We served ours with roasted broccoli and sweet potatoes.

Enjoy!!

Mmmm…those look yummy. Is there something I could substitute for the apple? I’m not allowed most fruits on my candida diet.

    1. Sarah says:

Hi Natalie! You can just leave the apple out or sub with either carrots or celery or a mix of both would be good too! : )

      1. Natalie says:

        Thanks Sarah. 🙂

  4. I love the idea of adding apple to meatballs! They look amazing!

  7. Nick says:

Natalie – I just left them out of my batch.. still very very yummy!

Also, my pap used to make meatballs with raisins in them .. give that a try.. sends a really nice sweet taste throughout the meatball as they cook!!!

    1. Natalie says:

      Thanks for the information Nick.

    2. Sarah says:

      Yum with raisins! Sounds good… : )

  8. Nolette Brell says:

I am NEWBIE to this Paleo way of eating, so please excuse my ignorance. So this would be considered a paleo diet with the honey? I love curry, hesitant to use with my husband and kids, what other spice can I substitute for curry or can I leave it out and would it still be as tasty. What else can we serve with this dish?

    1. Herman G. says:

i believe you are able to use cumin, but i might take out the apples because that doesn’t seem like it would go well… I am also new to the diet, started on April 4th, but it has been great so far, definitely dropping lbs and inches… My wife is the one who got me to try it and brought me to this website in which it has been very insightful…

    2. Sarah says:

Hi Nolette, I every now and then will use a little bit of honey in a recipe which works fine for our family, it’s really up to you if you want to entirely avoid it or not. 1 tablespoon of honey that is spread over 3 lbs of ground beef, in my humble opinion is not something I stress over, but it’s all up to you and what feels best for you! I’m not sure what other spice I would suggest using for this specific recipe, the curry is really what makes the dish. It’s not spicy at all, very savory and delicious. If you want to try a meatball that’s a bit more on the “normal” side of things, try out these two recipes: http://everydaypaleo.com/2009/12/03/magnificant-meatballs/

    1. Sarah says:

Awesome Beth!! So glad everyone liked it!

Thank you for another ground beef recipe. We eat a lot of ground beef because as far as grass fed beef goes, it’s affordable. Can’t wait to give this one a go!

  20. Michelle says:

    These are delicious! Thanks!

    1. Sarah says:

      You’re welcome! : )

  21. Hi Sarah,

Made these last night and am eating them again right now. They went over extremely well with my significant other, and we stuffed ourselves. The sauce was delicious as well.

We added a lot of bacon to the recipe. That never hurts. But we thought it would be even more improved with minced garlic in the meatballs and possibly some celery. That’s what I will try next time I make them.

Thanks again for the great recipes.
    -Forrest

    1. Sarah says:

Yes, bacon makes anything taste better! YUM!

  22. Sarah!! THank you thank you!! Your food is the best out there for Paleo. I have ordered your book (in London) and tell everyone to hit your site. X

Thanks Sarah, all four kids loved them! A recipe I will be adding to our regular schedule!

  24. I’ve got them in the oven at this moment. Can’t wait to tast how they turned out!

  25. I recently bought a curry cookbook but haven’t tried anything from it yet. Curry is new for me and I’ve been a little apprehensive about trying it. I saw your post the other day and it really looked so delicious. So, last night I made this dish but I used ground turkey instead of beef and I only had raisins on hand so I subbed that for the apples. They turned out wonderful!! I served them over some riced cauliflower. I can’t wait to make them for my Mom.

    1. Sarah says:

So glad you liked them, your version sounds delicious!!

  26. tricia says:

WOW! This is probably my favorite meal since going Paleo 6 months ago, and I have had a lot of good meals! My whole family loved it! I ended up making more sauce since we loved it so much! Thanks for another good recipe!

  28. Laura says:

We tried these and they were delicious. I just got your book yesterday. It is great. The fitness section was a nice surprise. Congrats. Great accomplishment.

  29. Amanda says:

Since one of the few high quality meats I can buy and afford is some local partially grass fed ground beef I have been making a lot of meatballs. This will be dinner tomorrow!

  30. Stephanie says:

We made these…..they are amazing! The only meatballs I will ever eat again 🙂

  31. Angie says:

Amazing!! I think these are simply the best thing I have ever cooked… thanks so much for the amazing recipe 🙂 Changes are made were: used only 2 lbs. of organic ground beef and only 1.5 tbsp curry powder but kept the same ratio of ingredients for the rest– I still got 15 large meatballs out of it! Also, I loved the sauce and think one should either 1.5 or double that part of the recipe because you don’t want to run out of sauce!

  32. Jennfer says:

Even though I recently got your (amazing) cookbook, I made these first. I was dubious about the curry, but boy were they good! I had to substitute hot curry and garam masala for the sweet curry, but it was great. Served it over spaghetti squash. The kids went back for thirds.

This morning I heated up three meatballs and then cut them up and topped them with poached eggs for a curry meatball hash. Delish!

  33. YUMMY! This sounds amazing, thanks so much for sharing! I’m waiting for your book to arrive and can’t wait to try more of your delicious recipes.

  34. Sounds so great! I agree, Kids and Meatballs=Winner!!!!! Can’t wait to try a new idea for a meatball!!!!By the way, I read your book cover to cover! Very helpful and inspirational!!! Can’t wait to try so many of them!!!!

  35. Rob G. says:

I made these tonight and they are really good! I also bought your book and every recipe I have tried was awsome. It is the best Paleo recipe book I have found thus far. Keep up the good work and keep those recipes coming.

  36. Julie says:

Yum! We just had these for supper tonight and they were a hit with everyone! We froze about 1/2 of the meat mixture because it was just me and the girls for dinner tonight and the recipe was too large. We will be pulling it out very soon though, it was so delicious!

  37. Annie Vaughn says:

These were just AMAZING! I’ve always feared my kids would reject anything with curry in it. Instead they just loved it! Thanks Sarah, I’ll be making this again and again!

  38. Jin-Hee says:

I just prepared this for dinner with some broccoli salad.
My 5 year old’s response was ” It looks so delicious!” He finished his dish without complaining. Those meatballs were really tasty. I’m so going to double up the recipe next time. BTW, I stumbled into your site and I’m loving lots of recipes.
So easy to prepare and so yummy. Thank you, thank you for sharing!!!

  39. Amy P. says:

Love your site, thank you for all that you share with your “groupies”! I am a Penzey’s addict myself (try the Chili 9000… yum!) but I haven’t tried curry meatballs on the kids yet. On the menu for next week for sure!

  40. Pat Wales says:

I made the meatballs last night. They were really yummy. The apple really added to the curry flavour. Threw a tin of chopped tomatoes into the sauce as my family likes more sauce. I had it with my Indian vegetables (used caulie, green beans and cherry tomatoes) stir fried with mustard seed and spices. Really colourful on the plate and lots of leftovers for whatever.

  41. redberry says:

These are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe.

After making these and eating them up, I am now going to buy your cookbook. 🙂

    1. Sarah says:

      Thank you redberry!

  42. Fallon says:

The meatballs were a-mazing! I just adore your blog. Thank you SO much for your delicious, speedy and healthy recipes! As a nutritional health coach, I like to send folks to your blog often for recipes and for grain-free diet ideas! I hope to grab a copy of your cookbook soon.

  43. Just ate these for dinner tonight with some zuchgetti & wow! These were DELICIOUS. I’ve been really missing the flavor of curry, but the curry we have at home (Japanese and Korean varieties of powders and cubes) all contain wheat. 🙁 So I was really excited to try out this recipe. I’m glad I did. 🙂

    Thanks so much!

    1. Sarah says:

You are so very welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  44. Stephanie says:

Thanks so much for sharing all of your recipes! Everything I’ve tried has been so easy to make and delicious. These meatballs have become one of my go-to recipes for a quick, easy, have everything on-hand dinner. Great for leftovers, too!

  45. These are delicious! Thank you so much for helping me to convince my daughter to take curry off of her dislike list.

  46. Allyson P says:

I love these..along with just about everything else you make. The best part is that my husband also LOVES them – although I have not yet converted him to Paleo he still eats all of the Paleo food that I make – and he takes the leftovers!

  47. Oh my deliciousness! I made these tonight and everyone loved them. My 5 year old son kept asking for more. He said, “these are better than eating ice cream all day”. Thanks for the recipe. Unfortunately there were no leftovers; everyone had seconds. 🙂

  48. Karen says:

These meatballs were really good. I made the sauce in the slow cooker while they were in the oven then just added the meatballs, gave them a stir and let them cook on low for a couple of hours. They were better the next day. Yummy. Thanks!

  49. Steven says:

I made these meatballs yesterday for lunch and they were absolutely delicious! I made a third of what the recipe calls for since I am a bachelor, ate half for lunch and the other half for dinner after I got back from my CrossFit. I am new to this Paleo lifestyle but I’ve gone out already to the grocery store and started purchasing the basics: olive oil, coconut oil, etc etc. I plan on making the stuffed advocados next once I can get my food processor to work! Thanks again for the awesome recipes, I will continue to comment as I try more of your recipes!

    1. Awesome Steven! So glad you enjoyed the meatballs.

  50. I added some turmeric, coriander & cardamon to the meatballs and I also added some coconut milk to the sauce. Turned out delish!

    1. Sarah says:

Great ideas for additions, thanks Dani – I’ll have to try that!

  51. susan says:

Thank you so much! Just the recipe I was looking for. Just got grass fed ground beef from my uncle’s farm , love meatballs and trying to get away from all the canned tomato recipes. Made it tonite, love it and can’t wait for family and friends to try. Easy and delicious!

  52. Love the sauce!! Thanks for sharing:-)

  53. Tracy says:

Every time I make these I love them even more!!

  54. Maria says:

YUM!! My 7 year old son wanted nothing to do with meatballs until I found this recipe. Now, he actually asks me to make them 🙂 Thank you sooo much for sharing.

  55. Piper says:

You are a food genius!! I can’t wait to make these tonight….thank you for all the yummy recipes!! 🙂

  56. Mouth watering to say the least! Can I substitute ground beef with ground lamb?

    1. Sarah says:

      Yes!!

  57. Kerri Kinzer says:

I can’t believe how good these were, I was a little skeptical but more then pleased with the outcome – best meatballs i’ve ever eaten! Thanks for this recipe!!

  58. christine sten says:

I had a suspicion I was going to like this sauce so I made extra to put on other grilled meats this week. One of my nine year old girls had EIGHT meatballs along with her baked sweet potato! We only had two leftover, and they were delicious cold for an afternoon quick snack.

  59. They sound amazing, can’t wait to try!

  60. I have tried many of your recipes Sarah and they always turn out fantastic! This one I plan on making this evening as the family loves meatballs but with Turkey instead of ground beef served with a side salad and sweet potatoes. I was wondering however – what is the nutritional information for the meatballs?

  61. Jennifer M. says:

My husband grew up eating curry his father would make and loves when I “attempt” anything with curry for my father loved it too. My son has a new found love for curry when cooking, he is 18. I can’t wait to make this tonight 🙂 they will love it! JM

  62. Barb M says:

Made these for dinner last night. Delish and I can’t wait for lunch – leftovers.

  63. Lisa L says:

This was the first recipe I ever made using curry. It was so good! I have been looking for more cost effective ways to eat paleo and this recipe fits the bill! Thank you!

  64. Sherry says:

I have a few curry powders from Penzey’s Spices. Did you use the sweet or the hot curry? I was thinking of using a blend.

    1. I used just the standard yellow Indian curry! I would call it more sweet than spicy. : )

  65. I just prepped this to make tonight. I ended up with about 36 meatballs. I must have made them too small! I’m a little nervous as I’m not that skilled at finely chopping things so the chunks of onion and apple scare me! Fingers crossed!! Thanks for the recipe!

    1. OH my, that’s a lot of meatballs! LOL! I hope they taste delicious, let me know!

  66. Karen says:

Just made these amazing tasting meatballs!! The hubby loved it too. Only had 2 lbs gr.beef so I made some adjustments. Was worried that curry flavor would be a bit too strong for my taste, but it wasn’t. The sauce, oh the sauce … was soooo good!! The amts. on the sauce recipe don’t allow for very much at all. I’m a saucy kinda gal, so that made me sad ;( Next time I’m gonna quadruple the amts. so I can have some extra sauce 😉 Love your recipes & I’ve recently started listening to your podcast.

    1. Thank you Karen, so glad you enjoyed the meatballs!! 🙂
