Eating Paleo Gives You Wings

It’s pretty simple, really, I promise…  No matter what your sport might be, eating clean will give you that extra umph to make it through.  On game day come prepared.  The night before you should prepare your sweet potatoes, wash your strawberries, make a giant chicken salad, buy some lunch meat, and pack plenty of water.  Eat and rest well, work out smart, and get your wings…

Check out my husband flying – the pic of him standing up on top of the weights was his final standing verticle leap at 59 inches.  He also maxed that day on his standing press at 200 lbs.  This event was the Summer Strength Challenge at Level 10 Crossfit in Oroville –  an awesome group of folks who put on a fabulous event.  Huge shout out also to our girl Jenny L. who recently started training with us again at Norcal Strength and Conditioning who beat out all the other amazing female athletes for 1st place!!  I was happy just to be there an watch!

Do you promise promise? I’ve been xfitting for 2 years but never changed my diet up too much. I’ve been doing research on the Paleo diet and it looks soooo hard. I also see alot of differences ie. salt, sweet potatoes in what I find on the internet. I want to know I’m going to feel and see a difference in performance if I give up my beloved bagels. (:

Hey Sara! Yes, I promise promise. You will see your performance improve by switching up what you eat. If I’m wrong then I’ll go back to eating bagels (actually I won’t because I feel like crap when I eat bagels…, but you get my point!) : ) You might have already checked it out, but if not, I suggest visiting http://www.robbwolf.com He has so much legit information on why eating paleo is important on every level, from health to performance in the gym, to well, just about everything. Please keep me posted!!

I agree! I started doing crossfit about 4 months ago. It’s been hard…but that’s what it’s all about right? Well…I recently completed a 30 day strict paleo challenge and have maintained a weekly regiment of paleo. I use the weekends to cheat a little: ie: a few drinks:) My performance in the gym and my energy level has increased significantly. Even though it was much more evident during the challenge, I still feel such a difference in everything I do. It works! promise, promise!

Great site and wonderful recipes! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  8. Wow. Your husband’s “box” jump pictures is MORE than amazing. Wow. That’s awesome! I just started CrossFit in Los Gatos, CA, and LOVE IT. Although I’m definitely not up there in strength, I’m working on it. I have recently been eating Paleo too so I’m happy to have found your blog! Can’t wait to check out more of your eats. Ideas are always welcome.
And I do agree- clean eating trumps all in fitness and performance!
So… where do you live??? I went to Chico State!

    1. Sarah says:

Hey Lori! We live in Chico! My husband graduated from Chico State in 2000. Small world!

  9. hi, I’m just starting to read about paleo eating, is sweet potato/kumara okay (I thought that as a root vege you can’t eat raw it wasn’t a great idea).

Also read somewhere that cardio isn’t great, and that resistance training is better. I currently do about 5 hours a week of boxing and group fitness classes (body attack, bodystep les mills format, not sure if they are well known outside of NZ – I’m not sure if these are considered interval training or cardio), it’s all very confusing!

Any tips or pointers where to start would be greatly appreciated. Love your recipes! 🙂

    1. Hey Mathew!
Sweet potatoes (yams actually – the ones with the orange flesh) are ok in moderation and especially for athletes as a post workout recovery food. Also, kids can eat them up as much as they would like – they are an excellent dense carb choice packed with nutrients and do not have the gut irritating properties of regular white potatoes.

As far as exercise, I recommend finding a program that implements functional movements (squats, lunges, sprints, pulling, pushing, etc.) It sounds like your approach to fitness is on track, if you like it and you feel good, and you are not finding yourself injured – it’s probably fine! I would not say that cardio is “bad” but I’m not a huge fan of only running long distances without any sort of strength training. It’s just not that great for our bodies and does not transfer over so well to real life. I would much rather be strong enough to lift the bus off myself then have the ability to run for 20 hours without stopping… : ) Check to see if you have a CrossFit facility near you – that’s a great place to start….
      Good luck!
