There’s something about the meatball that my kids absolutely adore and who can blame them!  Meatballs are fun, easy to eat, and as I have discovered over the years, these meaty creations can be made a million different ways besides the standard Italian style meatball that most of us are familiar with.  On Sunday we made curried meatballs and I used curry powder from Penzeys Spices!  I was given an amazing gift last week of several Penzeys spices and I have had so much fun trying them all out!  Chrissy of Growing Up Paleo swears by Penzeys and now I know why.  However, any curry powder will work just as well, there are several others that I adore but it was fun using something new!

We made a huge serving of meatballs so that we could have leftovers.  Now the recipe!

Curried Meatballs

Meatballs

3 lbs ground beef

1 cup finely diced red onion

1 cup apple finely diced

1 egg

2 tablespoons curry powder

½ tablespoon sea salt

Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 400. In a large bowl, place all of the meatball ingredients and mix well.   using your hands.  Form into meatballs just a little bit bigger than a golf ball and place into a large glass baking dish.  Bake for 25 minutes.  Makes 24 meatballs.  While the meatballs are cooking prepare the sauce!

Curry Sauce

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 teaspoon crushed garlic

1 tablespoon raw organic honey (optional)

1 tablespoon curry powder

2 tablespoons tomato paste

½ cup chicken broth

In a large skillet saute the garlic in the coconut oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Add the honey, curry powder, and tomato paste and whisk together.  Add the chicken broth and continue to whisk until the sauce is smooth.  Bring to a simmer.  After the meatballs come out of the oven, add them to the sauce in the skillet and coat well.  Cover and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes.  Serves 6-7.

We served ours with roasted broccoli and sweet potatoes.

Enjoy!!

Hi Natalie! You can just leave the apple out or sub with either carrots or celery or a mix of both would be good too! : )

Also, my pap used to make meatballs with raisins in them .. give that a try.. sends a really nice sweet taste throughout the meatball as they cook!!!

I am NEWBIE to this Paleo way of eating, so please excuse my ignorance. So this would be considered a paleo diet with the honey? I love curry, hesitant to use with my husband and kids, what other spice can I substitute for curry or can I leave it out and would it still be as tasty. What else can we serve with this dish?

i believe you are able to use cumin, but i might take out the apples because that doesn’t seem like it would go well… I am also new to the diet, started on April 4th, but it has been great so far, definitely dropping lbs and inches… My wife is the one who got me to try it and brought me to this website in which it has been very insightful…

Hi Nolette, I every now and then will use a little bit of honey in a recipe which works fine for our family, it’s really up to you if you want to entirely avoid it or not. 1 tablespoon of honey that is spread over 3 lbs of ground beef, in my humble opinion is not something I stress over, but it’s all up to you and what feels best for you! I’m not sure what other spice I would suggest using for this specific recipe, the curry is really what makes the dish. It’s not spicy at all, very savory and delicious. If you want to try a meatball that’s a bit more on the “normal” side of things, try out these two recipes: http://everydaypaleo.com/2009/12/03/magnificant-meatballs/

    Hi Sarah,

Made these last night and am eating them again right now. They went over extremely well with my significant other, and we stuffed ourselves. The sauce was delicious as well.

We added a lot of bacon to the recipe. That never hurts. But we thought it would be even more improved with minced garlic in the meatballs and possibly some celery. That’s what I will try next time I make them.

Thanks again for the great recipes.

I saw your post the other day and it really looked so delicious. So, last night I made this dish but I used ground turkey instead of beef and I only had raisins on hand so I subbed that for the apples. They turned out wonderful!! I served them over some riced cauliflower. I can’t wait to make them for my Mom.

Amazing!! I think these are simply the best thing I have ever cooked… thanks so much for the amazing recipe 🙂 Changes are made were: used only 2 lbs. of organic ground beef and only 1.5 tbsp curry powder but kept the same ratio of ingredients for the rest– I still got 15 large meatballs out of it! Also, I loved the sauce and think one should either 1.5 or double that part of the recipe because you don’t want to run out of sauce!

Even though I recently got your (amazing) cookbook, I made these first. I was dubious about the curry, but boy were they good! I had to substitute hot curry and garam masala for the sweet curry, but it was great. Served it over spaghetti squash. The kids went back for thirds.

This morning I heated up three meatballs and then cut them up and topped them with poached eggs for a curry meatball hash. Delish!

I made the meatballs last night. They were really yummy. The apple really added to the curry flavour. Threw a tin of chopped tomatoes into the sauce as my family likes more sauce. I had it with my Indian vegetables (used caulie, green beans and cherry tomatoes) stir fried with mustard seed and spices. Really colourful on the plate and lots of leftovers for whatever.

I made a third of what the recipe calls for since I am a bachelor, ate half for lunch and the other half for dinner after I got back from my CrossFit. I am new to this Paleo lifestyle but I’ve gone out already to the grocery store and started purchasing the basics: olive oil, coconut oil, etc etc. I plan on making the stuffed advocados next once I can get my food processor to work! I have tried many of your recipes Sarah and they always turn out fantastic! This one I plan on making this evening as the family loves meatballs but with Turkey instead of ground beef served with a side salad and sweet potatoes. I was wondering however – what is the nutritional information for the meatballs?

My husband grew up eating curry his father would make and loves when I “attempt” anything with curry for my father loved it too. My son has a new found love for curry when cooking, he is 18. I can’t wait to make this tonight 🙂 they will love it! JM

Made these for dinner last night. Delish and I can’t wait for lunch – leftovers.

This was the first recipe I ever made using curry. It was so good! I have been looking for more cost effective ways to eat paleo and this recipe fits the bill! Thank you!

I have a few curry powders from Penzey’s Spices. Did you use the sweet or the hot curry? I was thinking of using a blend.

I used just the standard yellow Indian curry! I would call it more sweet than spicy. : )

I just prepped this to make tonight. I ended up with about 36 meatballs. I must have made them too small! I’m a little nervous as I’m not that skilled at finely chopping things so the chunks of onion and apple scare me! Fingers crossed!! Thanks for the recipe!

Just made these amazing tasting meatballs!! The hubby loved it too. Only had 2 lbs gr.beef so I made some adjustments. Was worried that curry flavor would be a bit too strong for my taste, but it wasn’t. The sauce, oh the sauce … was soooo good!! The amts. on the sauce recipe don’t allow for very much at all. I’m a saucy kinda gal, so that made me sad ;( Next time I’m gonna quadruple the amts. so I can have some extra sauce 😉 Love your recipes & I’ve recently started listening to your podcast.
