An Intro to the Beautiful Marche!!

As many of you know, my family and I are traveling through Italy, soaking up the culture and cooking our way through several different regions of this spectacular country.  We started our journey first in Bologna and moved on from there to Pesaro. All last week we were staying near the Adriatic Sea, in the region known as Le Marche.  Il Pignocco was our home base; a magical, fairytale location perched on top of a hill overlooking Pesaro.  The charming Il Pignocco is an old Italian farmhouse dating back to the 18th century that has been restored into a beautiful holiday house that is perfectly located – hidden away – and a beautiful place that we would have been happy to stay forever.  Everyday if I could, you would find me resting under the ancient olive trees and listening to the birds sing, but as always, real life intercepts my fantasies…

Thank you so much to Anna and Francesca for your hospitality and wonderful accomodations and I highly recommend visiting Il Pignocco if you ever find yourself in the Marche region of Italy.

I also had the pleasure of working with Moreno Moretti, the founder of Le Marche Holiday.  When I first started corresponding with Moreno, quite frankly I was concerned that he might not understand my purpose; but I was dead wrong.  I explained to Moreno my objective and what he supplied was seriously beyond my wildest expectations.  From truffle hunting to cooking with a chef in an Osteria perched literally in heaven; cooking food so deliciously fresh, locally grown, and lovingly prepared, that I thought I was dreaming. The experience that Moreno created for us was other-worldly.  To top it all off Moreno is a young man with a passion to keep his small region alive by supporting local farmers and food suppliers.  He is truly an honorable person, working hard to maintain the integrity of his culture, with his goal firmly set to keep alive the deeply rooted traditions of his region.

Now, please enjoy this video interview with Moreno and stay tuned for detailed videos, pictures, and articles of our amazing adventures in the Marche.  Thank you Moreno and thank you to “the power of the Marche.”  My life is forever changed after our one week visit…

Thank you for sharing your travels in Italy. I visited over 10 years ago (Milan, Florence, Rome) and I miss it so much! Watching this makes me want to contact Moreno ASAP and get over to the Marche region. I loved the food, the people, and the slowness of it all! However, I wasn’t Paleo at the time and I certainly enjoyed more than my fair share of pasta. It would be nice to go back and concentrate more on the sauces, soups and meats!

It hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be to eat here at all! In fact, as I type I’m sitting in a little cafe eating the most amazing vegetable soup!! Thanks so much for your comment, I’m glad you are enjoying the posts!

Great interview! Would you equate the slow food movement Moreno talked about with “buy local” and supporting Farmers’ Markets and CSAs here in the states?

The message of slowing down and embracing the real priorities of life is always a needed reminder of how to “keep it real” (European phrase equivalent??)

Hmmm, does this amazing adventure mean that we can look forward to a travel journal style filled cookbook, filled with your heart felt and insightful writings as well as wonderful recipes, paleo-tized? Hope so! 🙂

Thank you for sharing your talents and adventures!

    1. Sarah says:

Hi Erin, Yes I would for sure equate the slow food movement with buying local, supporting your farmers markets and CSA’s. It’s exactly the same thing really. Yes, my amazing adventure definitely means a travel journal style filled cookbook, and hopefully the first of several as we continue with our travels. Thank you so much for your comment!!

Sounds like an amazing experience! A great reminder to enjoy life, quality food, and the people around you!

  7. Oh this is wonderful! I lived and studied in the town of Macerata in Le Marche in college and still have such fond memories of traveling through the region. Unfortunately I wasn’t there for truffle season like you are, but still found much delicious local fare.

My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon in Sardinia and there were agriturismi everywhere there– dozens upon dozens of local farms offering meals made up of food grown/raised and prepared on their own land. Are there any in Marche?

We went to one that featured 5 incredible courses for just 40E (which included the homemade wine and liqueurs), and it was the only meal in my life that brought me to tears. Everything there was the result of hard work from two brothers and their parents, and we were the only customers there, allowing us to have time to talk with them about their farm, life on the island, and our respective cultures. It was an experience I will never forget!
