I must say, this soup was a huge success! So good in fact that the leftovers I imagined enjoying today were gone in a flash as I watched the last bits of soup being scraped from the bottom of the pot. I’m not sure what the heck I’m going to do as my boys continue to grow, and eat, and eat, and grow and holy cow – it’s crazy how much food these creatures consume! If I had a dollar for every time I heard the words, “I’m hungry” well – you get the picture. So, the moral of the story is, if you have as many hungry mouths to feed as I do, or if you make this over the weekend and want plenty of leftovers to get you through another busy week, double this recipe!!
Also, stay tuned for my next blog which will feature an entire paleo Thanksgiving meal plan! In the spirit of the holidays, check out this blog from Cavegirl Cafe – a great reminder that it’s time to start getting ready for the season!
Chicken Chili Soup
3 cups chicken breast, cooked and chopped (I used leftover grilled chicken breast)
1 onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 jalapeno or Fresno pepper, seeds removed and finely diced
2 – 4 oz cans of diced green chilis
4 cups chicken broth
2 tbsps olive oil
2 tsps ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Black pepper to taste
Fresh cilantro, diced
Avocado, diced
In a large soup pan, sauté the onion, garlic, and jalapeno together in the olive oil until the onions are tender. Add the canned green chilis, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and black pepper. Stir together and add the chicken broth. Bring to a boil, turn down to medium low, and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the chicken and cook for another 5 minutes. Serve with fresh cilantro and avocado.
Enjoy!

Looks pretty tasty!!! Keep up the good work!
I made a version of this last week and it was delicious!! For my chicken chili I used chicken thighs. I put everything in the crockpot over night and by the morning the chicken was so tender that it fell apart while I was stirring it. The best part was that it cooked while I slept!
Yum Stacy! Great idea!
Thank you so much for posting this Stacy because that is exactly what I was wanting to do, and now will!
This looks really good. About how many people did it serve?
Hey Josh,
It served 5 – one being a 3 year old. : )
Just went to the grocery store to get ingredients. Looks delicious!!
I’m curious how spicy/hot the soup is with the jalapeno and cumin? It looks delicious and something to make for this weekend.
Hi Karen, just a touch of heat, not too spicy! If you like it mild, use half the jalapeno and that should do the trick. : )
This was an amazing recipe! Thank you
I’m glad you mentioned doubling the recipe as I have three growing boys myself. My two five year olds must be going through a growth spurt this week as I cannot seem to keep up with them! So glad for your site and for a few “snack” recipes from Elena’s Pantry. You creative women are lifesavers!
Hey Sarah, I love, love, love all of your recipes! Can’t wait to try this one. I tried the Nutty Cookies last week and enjoyed them. Can’t wait for your book!
Thank you Katy!! : )
Yum. I’m working on adapting my family’s traditional Mexican recipes to Paleo friendly versions. In the meantime, this one sounds like a great start!
I read this receipe last night and this morning went, to the store, for all the ingredients and WOW is good! Everyone needs to try this one. GREAT JOB on this meal!!
looks fab. it’s on my menu for the upcoming week. thanks for sharing.
We made this today, yum! I also had leftover grilled chicken-the flavor is great in this soup!
I am gonna try this but I dont eat nightshades so all those (peppers, chilis, and cayenne) will be eliminated. Maybe I will add in a bunch of chopped cilantro to give it more flavor. Thoughts?
Hi Sarena,
I think added more cilantro will be good, maybe some extra cumin, and some lime juice? I think it will still be pretty tasty, let me know how it turns out! You can also add more veggies like carrots, zucchini and cabbage to make it more of a vegetable chicken soup. : )
Thanks Sarah!
Made this tonight. I doubled the recipe for lunches but I don’t know how much will be left! I left the cayenne out and used vegetable broth. it’s really good!
Sarah,
So last night my husband and I were invited to a gathering where the offerings would be limited (think: pizza & soda). I packed my own back up meal, but hubby was planning to stop by somewhere on the way to fill up before the party. We couldn’t think of anywhere to stop and finally he said, “Isn’t there an EverydayPaleo Restaurant somewhere we could find??”
So there you have it! He knows how much I love your blog/recipes and if you opened a restaurant we would both be there will bells on!
Love your stuff:)
LOVED this recipe. I made it yesterday and we’ve eaten every last drop as of this afternoon!
this sounds amazing.
a very cold day in Maine and I think this is the perfect way to warm up!
making this today and will enjoy a steaming hot bowl of soup after my run later today.
ps-glad the website move is complete. I was nervous yesterday when I tried to find a recipe!!
Hi Jennifer!! I’m glad the website move is complete too – talk about being nervous, yikes!!!! : )
I made this soup yesterday and wow. DELISH. I am in LOVE. This is going to be one of those winter staples.
Made this with leftover turkey tonight and it was great! Didn’t have a can a chiles so used jar of sugar free green chili salsa. Cut the spices in half and it was perfect for us! Oh and we served it over cauliflower mash.
My Husband and I Loved this soup!! Perfect for a cold day like we had in Denver today!! Thank you so much! Yum! Yum!
This recipe is simple, easy to make, and simply delicious. Thanks, and OM NOM NOM!
Hi! We threw all the ingredients in a crockpot and it came out great! Thanks for the idea 🙂 We are new to paleo lifestyle and really enjoying it so far.
Sarah, these recipes look AMAZING!! I just went on Amazon and pre-ordered the book. I’m always looking for ways to keep happy healthy bellies in my home.
Thanks Julie!!! : )
I made the soup for the second time tonight and it’s one of the most delicious soups I have ever tasted – Paleo or non-Paleo. Sarah, you’re a lifesaver; Paleo does NOT mean bland. 🙂
Thanks Monica!!
Easy, easy, easy! LOVE this soup. I did add the chilis, but left out the hot peppers. I also added some diced tomatoes to my version, about 1/2 can. The diced chilis totally made the flavor of the soup PERFECT, just enough heat and a ton of flavor. This is the second soup of yours I love, the caribbean seafood stew was awesome. Thanks as always for your recipes.
Great Recipe, my 2.5 year old ate his entire bowl! (an so did we!)
Happy New Year.
Just made this for dinner. DELICIOUS. Loved the spice..it was so good! And we’re so excited to have some leftovers! 🙂
Hi Sara Ross, so glad you like it – I love this soup! : )
I made this evening for an impromptu dinner with some non-paleo eating friends. I added diced carrots, green and red peppers, and mushrooms. They loved and could hardly believe that something that tasted so good was Paleo. I told them I only eat yummy food. 🙂
I love it Michelle, life’s too short to NOT eat yummy food!!
I made this Chicken Chili soup today and husbund said it was the best soup he has every ate , so thumbs up with this one , the only thing I did different was add a can chipolite corn , it was very good and tasty, I will make again
Thanks Julie, so glad you both liked it!
Hey sarah!
Just a quick question about chickens. I’ve got my first organic chicken and it’s still got the gross bits left inside it? Do you know what I can do with them? Can i fry the livers? There are also some long things (look a bit like meat covered bones). Can i put them in my stock?
Cheers
Jenny
Hi Jenny! You can do this with those gross bits if you want to: http://girlgoneprimal.blogspot.com/2010/03/recipe-chicken-liver-pate.html or toss them into your stock as well as long as you don’t mind the liver flavor and the long thing is the neck and yes for sure put that into your chicken stock! : )
I made this a couple days ago…soooo good! My roommates who criticize my paleo eating habits loved it. Little did they know…haha thanks for the great recipes!
I convinced another Paleo friend to try one recipe a week from this site. We are both single and so we each make a recipe a week and share half with the other person. She made this and I ate it today for lunch. DELICIOUS. Everyone around me eating fast food wanted to know what it was because it smelled SO good. Fantastic.
This was SO good, I mean packed with flavor! Passed the kid test (although my kids will eat anything). Only tweak I made was that I had some tomatillos that i roasted and chopped into the soup. Love your recipes!
yum. tonight was high school football for my freshman. i put this together and came home to yummy hot soup. and it was cooold and windy out there!
I made this last night and it was fantastic!! Definitely doubling it next time around so it will last a few days…perfect meal for a cold day, I have a feeling we’ll be making a lot of this during the winter 🙂
If I made this in the crockpot, would I just throw everything in (raw chicken?) and put on low for the day?
This was great. I didn’t put the avocado in it. But I added a can of diced tomatoes that had green peppers and onions in it. and also use garlic power instead and it was a great hit.
This is awesome! I have made it at least 20 times, really. The only thing I do differently is add more cumin, which I love.
Thanks for all your dishes but this is my favorite!
I am going to put this in a crockpot for a carry-in soup cook off (benefits local food pantry) today at work! Wish me luck. AND they won’t even know I snuck in some paleo food on them!
Good luck!! Let us know how it goes!!
Thanks Sarah! It was well received, and I hear the aroma from the crockpot filled the entire 2nd floor where I had the crockpot plugged in. There is only a bit of leftovers for me to bring home tonight! That’s the only bummer.
Any nutritional info?
It was great!
Tasha
Hubby and I loved this soup. It was like chicken enchiladas in a bowl. It was a bit too spicy for my kids, though.
This is great! I’m not new to Paleo but this is the first I’ve stuck with it strictly. Used purple onion istead of white and ground Turkey instead of chicken (I eat a ton of chicken so wanted to change it up). Still turned out amazing! Thanks so much!!!
Great Recipe! The flavor of the spices made for a delightful chili! We added a 14.5 oz can of organic diced tomatoes.
I cook a lot, and (have been told by many) I’m a great cook. That being said, this is a phenomenal SIMPLE & EASY recipe. I made it within 30 minutes before my evening class. My boyfriend came back from work and texted this: “Soup is AMAZING! I’m gonna need discipline to keep my portions low.” He had 1.7 bowls of it by the time I got home…and had another bowl late at night. In conclusion, THANK YOU!! I don’t make many dishes twice, but this one I will be. And sharing!
Thank you Rose! So glad you enjoyed the soup! I love this one too…. : )
Please I would like the break down on the carb, calories etc. for this recipe. Giving it a test run today. Just found this website. I am a lo carber so I do use some paleo recipes and you are a great help. Thanks so much Sarah.
